Dance to the Music Competition Team 2016-2017
The following is an overview of our competition team’s rules and regulations. We pride ourselves in providing our dancers with the tools needed to succeed in the competitive world of dance. The Dance to the Music competition team was developed to create a positive environment where dancers can grow as performers, as well as increase their self-esteem, self-discipline, and pride in their accomplishments. Our dancers will improve their dance technique, become more precise and enthusiastic, and learn how to be responsible team members. At Dance to the Music we value the process, not just the award at the end, and we encourage our dancers to appreciate all accomplishments, no matter how small.
We believe that students exposed to a healthy competition learn that no matter what the results, the important thing is that we perform to the best of our abilities, while gaining confidence and having fun in the process.
As part of your commitment to the team, and to create a positive atmosphere, each member is expected to:
- Maintain a positive attitude in all classes
- Be prompt for class
- Put forth your best effort in every class
- Miss no more than 3 classes (plan all vacations and other activities accordingly)
- When absent, learn the choreography prior to returning to next class
- Show respect to all parents, faculty members, and all fellow dancers in and out of the studio
- Cyber bullying will not be tolerated (this includes all social media).
It is mandatory that all members participate in all performances with the exception of serious injuries/illness, or family emergencies. We encourage our students to broaden their dance education; however, taking class within a 15 mile radius conflicts with your representation of the Dance to the Music competition team (this may result in suspension or removal from the team). Loyalty is a crucial part in building a strong team, and together that is what we are!
The following explains additional required classes for each competition student. Additional classes should be chosen according to the type of team you are on.
- Jazz/Tap/Musical Theater/Lyrical/Contemporary
2 classes per week plus a ballet class are required and a Jumps, Leaps, and Turns class is strongly suggested
2 ballet classes per week
- Hip Hop
2 classes per week are required and a Jumps, Leaps, and Turns class is strongly suggested
Individual teachers may suggest additional classes where they feel necessary.
More than 3 absences may result in suspension or removal from the team.
At any point in the year, teachers may call for extra practices. Extra practices are held to correct or improve a dance. Advance notice will be given. Commitment on everybody’s part is greatly appreciated.
At Dance to the Music we understand and encourage our dancers to be well rounded individuals. We have many competition dancers and that means a great deal of schedules to work around. If you have chosen to be a part of the Dance to the Music competition team, we need Dance to the Music to be your top priority. We will need all sports, band, cheer, play, dances, etc. schedules as soon as possible to avoid conflict with extra practices and competition dates.
Please remember when you sign the Dance to the Music Competition Team Contract, you are not only committed to Dance to the Music and the teachers, but you are also committed to the other students.
All team members must sign this contract in order to compete.
Competition dates will be announced as soon as they become available, generally we compete between Feb. and April.
If you already have a vacation booked for this time period, contact one of the directors (Peggy or Carol) immediately. Otherwise, please keep all weekends free until you have the finalized schedule in your hands. We do not receive scheduling information from the competition until one week prior. This is beyond our control.
All Competition Costumes are $85.00 if paid by Oct.15th 2016; $95.00 thereafter. There may be an additional cost for accessories.
Each competition requires a registration AND entrance fee. The deadline for these fees is December 1st. Each group dance at competition costs on average $35-$50 per dance routine, and duos, trios, and solos are individually priced according to the venue.
A $15.00 late fee per routine will be charged to your account if paid late. We will inform you of the exact competition dates and the amounts due, as the information becomes available.
Please note: contacting a competition or director of an event for any reason is prohibited by both parents and students and will result in the removal of the student from the competition team(s). If you have a concern, please contact the studio.
Dance to the Music has made the decision to keep all their hair and make-up the same for all competition dances to make it easier on the students. This will save time and give teachers more time to spend with their students before they perform. Exceptions will be made accordingly.
Fundraiser money goes towards your competition fees, not costumes. There are many fundraisers available to each student. We encourage fundraisers; however, they are the responsibility of the students and parents. No credit will be used after Nov. 1st for this competition season. All other funds raised after Nov, 1st will be credited to the following season.
Summer Classes Competition students are required to take summer classes in order to stay current and increase their skills and abilities. Competition classes held during the summer session will cover new material and will start routines for the following year. Please plan your summer schedules accordingly. Some optional workshops will be offered in the summer as well as mandatory workshops for all competition students.
